Doberman’s coat – types of hair
Color
Color is one of the characteristics that make this breed recognizable.
Doberman has hair that can occur in two basic colors and some of their varieties.
Basic Doberman colors are black and brown, while black can occur in the varieties of blue, and brown in color varieties known as Fawn, sometimes called as Isabella. There is also a possibility that the hair appears in a completely white, sometimes even with albino characteristics (as complete absence of pigmentation around the eyes, eyelids, the nose and mucous membranes).
One of the important characteristics of the breed is that in addition to the basic colors, the body of a dog appears with markings in various shades of brown-red color.
To understand the color and its great importance for the actual breed, we need to understand the history of the creation of Dobermans.
Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann is considered as a father of this breed. A German tax and debt collector, when doing his job very seriously around 100 years ago, has encountered various inconveniences while trying to fee-collect taxes from taxpayers.
Thinking about how to improve his business, he came up with the idea that his job would be a lot easier if he would brought along a dog. Sharp and dangerous appearance of the dog that would impress taxpayers, and on the other side a faithful, loyal and very gentle dog, full of understanding, love and attention for its owner and people in general, with the character that would enable easy learning and executing tasks.
This was not difficult for him, because he was housing stray dogs in his spare time, so he had access to a number of different dogs, with whom he could begin this exciting journey.

In this case the role of the dog’s color and size were of paramount importance.
Tan in combination with base color gives a scary expression and appearance, when we add cropped ears and cropped tail to it, the impression of a dangerous dog is complete. So, the mere appearance of the dog with its size and color was enough to intimidate strangers, yet on the other hand, dogs developed as a very kind, and stable characters, because selection was free to develop in this direction.
The rest is history, which we live today, with these beautiful beings.
.. next week: Characteristics of a Doberman coat, undercoat, the cycle of growth and molt- why the dog always shed and can it be prevented?
Stay tuned, love
